The public places of the city are culturally contested, even if there seems to be a dominant Western paradigm. The area of Greater Melbourne was settled by five Kulin nations and their cultural traditions are maintained. The studio will investigate how this contest has its basis in the overlay of European and Indigenous cultures. Through a series of architectural debates, where students are expected to take sides, the foundations and futures of both cultures will be explored through urban design and architecture. Students will then use these ideas to design public programmes for a new model of a deeply culturally and spatially enmeshed city.
