RMIT Architecture invites you to a public online lecture by MARCELO SPINA and GEORGINA HULJICH of P-A-T-T-E-R-N-S.

“MUTE ICONS & OTHER DICHOTOMIES OF THE REAL IN ARCHITECTURE”

This lecture will present the work of the architecture practice P-A-T-T-E-R-N-S and the theoretical positions established in their new book ‘Mute Icons & Other Dichotomies of the Real in Architecture’. The lecture will follow a discussion with RMIT Architecture Associate Professor Roland Snooks.

Interrogating historical, contemporary, and — more importantly— speculative images, ‘Mute Icons & Other Dichotomies of the Real in Architecture’ aims to construct a viable alternative to the icon’s cliché and exhausted form of communication, positing one that is decidedly introverted and withdrawn. Developing a language and a sensibility for discovering simultaneous, contradictory, and even unexpected readings of architectural form, Mute Icons, aims to carve out a niche in contemporary culture and history by suggesting that far from being a crowd-pleaser, architecture can persist within society as a constructive cultural and social irritant. No longer concerned with narrative excesses or with the “shock and awe” of sensation making; the mute icon becomes intriguing in its deceptive indifference towards context, perplexing in its unmitigated apathy towards the body. Object and building, absolute and unstable, anticipated and strange, manifest and withdrawn, such is the dichotomy of mute icons.

Marcelo Spina founded P-A-T-T-E-R-N-S in 2002 in Los Angeles as a speculative platform to explore an increasingly global design culture. Spina holds a Professional Degree from the National University of Rosario, Argentina and a Master of Architecture from Columbia University in New York. He worked for Reiser+Umemoto and Keller Easterling before starting on his own practice. Spina is a Design Faculty at SCI-Arc since 2001, where he is also the coordinator of the Architectural Technologies Program. He has been a Visiting Professor at the Universities of Yale, Syracuse, Harvard, Berkeley, Vienna, Innsbruck, and Di Tella among others. His work has been published and exhibited widely and he has given more than 100 lectures around the world.

Georgina Huljich joined P-A-T-T-E-R-N-S as partner in 2006. Huljich holds a Professional Degree from the National University of Rosario, Argentina and a Master of Architecture from UCLA where she graduated with  Distinction and was the recipient of several design awards. She has previously worked at the Guggenheim Museum and the architectural firm Dean/Wolf Architects in New York, and at Morphosis Architects in Los Angeles. Huljich is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Department of Architecture at UCLA where she teaches since 2006. She has been a Visiting Professor at the Universities of Yale, Pennsylvania, Syracuse, Berkeley, USC and TIT in Tokyo.
