EXTREME Architecture

The EXTREMES Studio deals with the notion of architecture and building in extreme environments. The functional focus of the buildings is developed gradually from a SMALL RESEARCH STATION – as a single highly specialised live/work unit (until January 09) – to a HOTEL – as an agglomeration of these units (until June 09). The technical focus of the Extremes Studio lies on adaptable and responsive structures that react to external dynamic forces.

The adaptation to – or the deformation by – external influences will be driven by aspects of energy and information in connection with sustainability and performance. The studio focus is on the Transformability / Adaptability of the building in extreme conditions and how the RESEARCH STATION deals with dynamic external forces (Avoidance and Absorption). It searches for deeper resonances and definitions of the transformation process with focus on locations which have been researched and defined as a starting point.

The EXTREMES Studio is being run in parallel simultaneously at RMIT Architecture, Melbourne and die Angewandte, Vienna by Tom Kovac and Wolf D. Prix respectively, with Melbourne and Viennese students and staff communicating via Skype and Quicklinks.

Niels Jonkhans, Reiner Zettl, of die Angewandte and Tom Kovac of RMIT Architecture led a workshop with  die Angewandte students, held in Günther Domenigs Steinhaus, Steindorf, Carinthia, Austria in November 2008.

The RMIT Architecture studio group of students travelled across to Vienna for a joint 10 day workshop with die Angewandte students in January, 2009, followed by a workshop review and exhibition at DESSA Gallery, City Museum in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

The studio has subsequently been exhibited in the Visions: Beyond Media Festival for Architecture and Media in Florence in July 2009.
