This studio will explore the architectural possibilities and implications of fibre-composites through the design of a pavilion. The pavilion will be designed in the studio and will then be fabricated over the subsequent summer semester by students undertaking an elective. There is no requirement for any students to take both the design studio (sem2 2015) and fabrication elective (summer 2016).

The studio will explore an innovative technique for building fibre-composite surfaces that enables the effective fabrication of complex curvature surfaces. We will speculate on the architectural implications of using this and related fibre-composite techniques. The studio will be focused on design and digital techniques, however it will include some prototyping.

The studio will have an unconventional structure, in that it will be run much like an architectural office. The studio will have weekly design presentations (Tuesday 1:30-5:30pm), however the ‘office’ will be run 3 days a week (Tue/Thu/Fri) and students will be expected to be at RMIT working collaboratively for the bulk of the business hours on those days. The design will be developed as a collaboration between the students and teaching staff.
