Join us for a student-led conversation this Thursday at the Design Hub. Current Major Project students will discuss and reflect upon the culture of the course, what they are looking at and what informs the generation of ideas.

“The first thing you deal with is the realisation that the hard problems of design are not hard because they have not been answered, but because there are many good answers. How to decide is one of the challenges of Major Project. In this respect, referencing becomes an important art in the practice of design – acting as inspiration, guardrail, aspiration, translation, lineage and potential.”
The Major Project, an individual endeavor, is informed and influenced by a cultural lineage. This student led “In Conversation” brings together current Major Project students and staff to discuss the role of references, past projects, and working methods in the development of design research. Each presenter will share three images that speak to their work: a formative reference, a previous Major Project they have referred to, and an image of their current work. This conversation will reveal the processes, influences, and decisions shaping their projects so far.
The session will also include a brief presentation from RMIT Architecture industry staff and Major Project supervisor Liam Oxlade, recipient of the 2020 Anne Butler Memorial Medal. This will be followed by an audience Q&A and discussion aimed at situating current work within the broader culture of RMIT’s Major Project. RMIT Master of Architecture student Kieran Merriman will moderate the session.
