PUBLIC LECTURE: RAFAEL LUNA & DONGWOO YIM. ACCESSORIES, SEOUL CASE STUDIES

05/18/23

RMIT Design Hub, Level 3 Lecture Theatre

RMIT Architecture invites you to a public lecture ACCESSORIES, SEOUL CASE STUDIES by RAFAEL LUNA & DONGWOO YIM of PRAUD.

In an era requiring cities to be more sustainable, and self-reliant, architecture faces the challenge of providing solutions for adaptation, densification, and productivity within the urban fabric. Some mixed neighbourhoods like Seongsu-dong in Seoul, already present some of these characteristics by integrating production facilities in-between residential buildings and commercial streets. From continuous observations of the transformations that this and other Seoul’s diverse neighbourhoods undergo, this lecture focuses on strategies of “accessories” that allow dynamic diversity in functionality to occur and provide a new agenda for the elements in architecture.

PRAUD was founded in Boston in 2010 by Dongwoo Yim and Rafael Luna and moved its base location to Seoul in 2017. Since the beginning, PRAUD has been pushing the boundaries of the roles of architect and explored a wide range of research in architecture, urbanism and design. PRAUD’s works have been published and exhibited worldwide, including MoMA in New York, DNA Galerie in Berlin, Korean Pavilion in Venice, and Seoul Hall of Urbanism and Architecture in Seoul amongst many others. PRAUD has received many prestigious awards such as the Architectural League Prize 2013, Golden Lion as participating artists in the 2014 Venice Biennale Korean Pavilion, and the Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM) Award in 2014. Both Dongwoo and Rafael were the curators of the Cities Exhibition in the Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism 2019, the guest editors of the AD Magazine “Production Urbanism,” and the authors of “A Language of Contemporary Architecture; An Index of Topology & Typology.”
