RMIT ARCHITECTURE ALUMNI SERIES: CARMODY GROARKE

Carmody Groarke is a London-based architectural studio, established in 2006 by RMIT Architecture alumnus Kevin Carmody and Andy Groarke. Since its formation the practice has gained a strong reputation for working on a wide range of arts, cultural, heritage and residential projects, both new build and within the context of historic buildings. The work spans a range of timescales from temporary pavilions to permanent memorials.

A strong emphasis is given to a critical design process; Carmody Groarke resists predetermining architectural solutions to a client’s brief prior to a thorough investigation of each project’s unique situation. This process results in buildings and spaces that maintain a close synthesis between people, place and purpose.

KEVIN CARMODY

Kevin Carmody is an alumnus of RMIT Architecture, graduating in 1999, moving to Europe that year. Kevin then worked for David Chipperfield Architects in London from 2000 up until establishing Carmody Groarke in 2006.

Andy Groarke and Kevin Carmody won the biennial Burnham prize for architecture in 2005, the New York Prize for Architecture (from the Van Alen Institute) in 2006 and were awarded Young Architect of the Year in 2007. They have also won the Architectural Review ‘Emerging Architecture Award’, and the D&AD ‘Yellow Pencil’ Awards for spatial design. Their projects have received several RIBA National, Regional and Special awards, including most recently a Regional award for a new build private house in Highgate, North London.

Kevin has lectured and taught extensively both in the UK and overseas, and was Visiting Professor at the University of Stuttgart, 2016-2017.

Kevin Carmody is in Melbourne as a guest of BRICKWORKS INTERNATIONAL SPEAKER SERIES. In addition to his Brickworks Lecture, Kevin will be spending time at RMIT and his lecture here will focus on his career from RMIT Architecture to the helm of one of the most exciting young practices in Europe.
