ABOUT THIS EXHIBITION SERIES

New Trends of Architecture was founded in 2001 by a group of cultural and press counsellors to Japan of the fifteen EU member states, European cultural institutes, and the Delegation of the European Commission to Japan with the aim of creating opportunities to share ideas and experiences between Europe and Japan through organizing annual exhibitions and symposia for promising architects in Europe and Japan, to be held in Tokyo and in the European Cultural Capitals.

The project was recognized not only in the architectural world but also in the diplomatic field. The former Chairman of European Commission, Romano Prodi and the Prime Minister of Japan, Junichiro Koizumi specially mentioned this project as an important exchange program in their co-announcement at the EU-Japan summit meeting in July 2002

The basic concept behind this project was inspired by the EU idea of the European Capital of Culture. Europe respects its cultural diversity, valuing the cultures of each region while unifying the continent in political and economical terms. It is trying to build networks not between countries but directly connecting cities to cities and cities to the wider world. Learning from the European experience, we wished to expand our New Trends of Architecture project from its original EU-Japan format to include the rest of Asia and the Pacific region as well.

In 2004, the year of the enlargement of European Union, the third edition of New Trends of Architecture was relaunched as a new initiative: a project linking the vast European and Asia-Pacific regions, and the exhibition, accompanied by symposia, was organized in Lille, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Cork, Melbourne and Anyang, and brought about rich encounters and exchanges in each city.
