I’m sorry that’s a sort of ABC question... I’d rather not..." On modernism: "Modernism was committed to city building but it was such a utopian vision of parkland, comprehensive destruction of existing fabric, stupendous infrastructure, all of which failed, not simply in terms of economics but it failed on a sort of moral and emotional basis." - Peter Corrigan, Part 1 Transcript On the suburbs: "I’ve always been an unabashed fan of the suburbs. I’ve admired the wonderful sense of survival of suburban Australia, quite in spite of the tiresome harassment from architectural aesthetics. I see them as a source of fabulous energy." On RMIT Building 8: "The forces that drove that building (RMIT Building 8) were to an extent the sense that the undergraduate population deserved to have a building that might reflect a certain wit and charm and some whimsy that they could call their own." - Peter Corrigan, Part 3 Transcript MAGAZINE INTERVIEW "Interview with Peter Corrigan" in Curtain issue Pataphysics Magazine, 1989 NEWSPAPER INTERVIEW Peter Corrigan interview in, "Yellow scapegoat" in The Age, 2 Sep 1981 reproduced in Snapshot of The Age Articles 150th Anniversary of The Age - The Age online website This article is on the controversial relocation of the "Vault" Sculpture by Ron Robertson-Swann, dubbed the "Yellow Peril". Corrigan: "I think the color yellow is a constant threat in our lives. It unhinges our sense of certainty. It is an aggressive sort of color that jumps over us. In traffic lights it means half-stop and half-go, and is used as the background color for warning signs. The color was the determinant factor, not the shape. If you’d painted it black, no one would have seen it. Like any decent work of art, he’s trying to raise the emotional level, get the juices going, and he certainly did it. If they’d put it in a square in Townsville or Perth, where there’s a different quality of light, where there’s no shadow, it would have been far more innocuous, a more innocent intrusion. They could have painted it a cadmium red and it would have still been there. The fact that people were drawn to scribble on it was a direct factor of the color. It dared you, like an old blonde girlfriend pouting at you. Blondes have all the fun. It’s as primitive as that."
