In mid-18th century Giovanni Battista Piranesi’s oeuvre produces a fierce visual attack that unsettles, once and for all, the stability of the classical language of architecture.  Neither theoretical treatise as intellectual manifesto (Alberti), nor self-promotional catalogue of innovative architectural designs (Palladio), the strength of Piranesi’s work resides in its being a graphic visual manifesto: his re-conception of architecture operates through a series of powerful images, which remain active and resonate still today in contemporary architectural discourse and practices.
