This project established a relationship with the Department of Education and Training and the Education Foundation. Two design studios were run in the Architecture Upper Pool by Peter Bickle & Hamish Lyon. The brief to students was to design an inner city school that would engage with the community on a site adjacent to Melbourne’s Town Hall. This project was run as a competition. The Competition Winner (Thuy Ai Chung) was announced by Rob Adams, Director City Projects, City of Melbourne at the Education Foundation Annual Summit. The studio work was exhibited at this summit in an exhibition titled “Radical School Design”.

In looking at architecture we often focus on the facade and the internal spaces. But what of the left-over bits - the unused yet necessary undercrofts, yawnings and gaps produced by the internal use and shape of buildings? The Unused evolves a number of architect and artist projects that inhabit these inhospitable spaces to create narratives and nuances that reflect upon economics, the collection and archive, the crime scene and social space.

Presented by the Melbourne Festival's Visual Arts, Film and Architecture Program 2002, in association with the RMIT School of Architecture and Design.
