Roland Snooks is a partner of the architecture practice Kokkugia. He holds a masters in advanced architectural design from Columbia University where he studied on a Fulbright scholarship after graduating from RMIT Architecture in 2002. Roland teaches at the University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University GSAPP and USC, has directed design studios and seminars at the Pratt Institute, SCI-Arc, UCLA, RMIT, and the VCA. Roland’s current teaching and research interests focus on emergent and algorithmic design processes involving genetic and agent based techniques. ![]() Facebook event page ![]() ![]() PUBLIC LECTURE FORCE FORM PERFORMANCE: Structural Design Strategies Prof. Manfred Grohmann, Bollinger+Grohmann Engineers Time: Friday November 20 2009, 6 pm Venue: RMIT Building 8, Level 11, Rm 8.11.68, 360 Swanston Street Convenor: Brent Allpress, RMIT Architecture Research Director Contemporary conditions of building design require the integration of ideas, the logic of space, the structure and its skin. Structural design engineers are essential collaborators from the immanence of architectural building design. Over the last 25 years, Bollinger+Grohmann have taken part in the development of architectural building design and have become well known for liberating structure and, with it, form. Feeling or even “smelling” the architect’s ideas they approach each project as a unique set of challenges. Their adaptability and flexible working methods have contributed to their successful collaborations with architects of widely varying design repertoires. In response to the complexity of contemporary architecture they combine a high level of interdisciplinary knowledge in architectural geometry, software development, material and fabrication technologies with advanced engineering expertise. PROF. DIPL.-ING. MANFRED GROHMANN graduated from Darmstadt Technical University in Civil Engineering. He has been Professor for Structural Design at Kassel University since 1996, Guest Professor at the Städelschule, Frankfurt since 2000 and at the ESA – École d´Architecture, Paris since 2007 and has taught at Darmstadt Technical University. Prof. Grohmann and Prof. Bollinger founded Bollinger+Grohmann in 1983, and both combine teaching at architecture schools with their practice. Prof. Grohmann is currently a co-supervisor in the RMIT Architecture and Design PhD Program with Prof Mark Burry. They are co-supervising an Architecture PhD candidate in the Spatial Information Architecture Embedded Practice stream who is situated within the practice of Bollinger+Grohmann researching smart materials and adaptive systems in architecture. BOLLINGER+GROHMANN ENGINEERS are an international engineering company in Frankfurt on the Main with more than 25 years experience in planning and structural design. With just under 100 employees at three cities (Frankfurt on the Main, Vienna, Paris), they are active in approx. 20 countries outside Germany. They have been working successfully for years with a number of internationally recognized architects. Their range of services includes structural and facade design, geometry development and construction physics. The field of work spans between the structural design of housing, office, commercial, exhibition and event facilities as well as classic civil engineering structures such as bridges, roofs and towers.
