The Design Competition was set up as one of the six Demo–Projects of the Municipal Spatial Support Programme (MuSPP) for collecting creative ideas to turn a city vision into action. This Demo-project is a joint initiative and co-funded by the Municipality of Ferizaj/Urosevac and UN-HABITAT-MuSPP (sponsored by Sida). The International Spatial Design Competition for the Mobility Centre Project is aimed at retrieving creative ideas from spatial and urban designers all over the world. The competition was successful as it attracted 43 entries from 22 countries. The Mobility Centre Project in Ferizaj/Urosevac aims at integrating all urban transport modes into one central hub, which should become a catalyst for the overall regeneration of the urban centre.

PREMIER'S DESIGN AWARD
LUMI Rainwater Tank
Katrina Logan, Bachelor of Architecture (Hons), 1998
City of Melbourne Sustainability Design Award, 2006
Premiers Design Awards

The project is driven by the designer's desire to integrate water conservation and architecture with aesthetics in mind. LUMI fills a gap within the market of water storage tanks. It is an object to be displayed, rather than hidden at the side of a house. Its sculptural satin acrylic casing is designed to glow in sunlight, making rainwater reserves visible, and is illuminated with internal lights at night. This effect reminiscent of the display signs throughout Melbourne, which indicate the level of Victoria's rainwater reserves.

The project's target market is the inner city design community, and the designer envisages the balconies of high rise developments as LUMI's ultimate destination.

LUMI is available in a range of colours and sizes, from 250 litres up to 1,100 litres, and its shape can be customised. For commercial applications, graphics can be applied to LUMI's outer surface to match a corporate identity.

Profile

Katrina Logan grew up in inner suburban Melbourne. She graduated from RMIT University with a Bachelor of Architecture in 1998; after working for Daniel Libeskind in Berlin as a student. In 2000, she set up Katrina Logan Architects, her own small architecture practice, specialising in inner city residential projects. She started the company Full Tank in 2004, with the vision of addressing water conservation through contemporary design, while also maintaining her architectural work.

Victorian promotes housing affordability, Property Review, December 15, 2004

All for one and one for all, The Age, March 20, 2006
"Mr Sandall approached Live Load, a practice committed to environmentally sustainable and socially aware design, which had just won the 2004 VicUrban Affordable Home Design Competition for its entry "The Orient", inspired by Chinese courtyard houses. The competition aimed to work with developers to provide house-and-land packages for about $200,000. Designed by Live Load partners Julia Lehmann and the late Quinton Duffy, the Well Street house is a development of the winning entry ideas."

LiveLoad is an Australian building
design practice established in 2000
by partners Quinton Duffy (1971–2005)
and Julia Lehmann.

In Memoriam

Quinton Duffy's death in 2005 was a great loss to the RMIT and Melbourne architecture community. He played a key role on the sessional staff at RMIT over a number of years, teaching in the First Year Design program and in Lowerpool Design, with studios that always engaged enthusiatically with making and materialisation as a driver for design thinking and practice. This approach informed his innovative practice LiveLoad with partner Julia Lehmann. Quinton is greatly missed by his colleagues and former students.
