That is selling us incredibly short." She said the Harvard model was "not a bad model, but it's not the only model. November 17, 2005 RMIT involved in Japanese garden research The historical and cultural impact of spatial sound in Japanese garden design is the basis of a new study involving RMIT University Spatial Information Architecture Laboratory researchers Dr Michael Fowler and project leader Lawrence Harvey, Director of the SIAL Sound Lab. The research project, titled 'Teimu (The Garden of Dreams): aural and aesthetic attributes of Japanese gardens as models for spatial environments', received $300,000 Australian Research Council funding under its Discovery Projects scheme, 2006-2008. October 27, 2005 RMIT Professor wins national architecture award RMIT University Innovation Professor of Architecture Leon van Schaik is the 2005 recipient of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects’ Architectural Education Prize in recognition of his significant contribution to design education in Australia. April 14, 2005 RMIT Architecture graduate Roland Snooks wins Fulbright award RMIT Architecture graduate Roland Snooks has won a Fulbright Postgraduate Award and will conduct research at the Graduate School of Architecture , Planning and Preservation at Columbia University in New York. September 17, 2004 Melbourne architects and RMIT Academics in world show at the Beijing Architecture Biennale Some of Melbourne’s best architects will represent Australia on the world stage at the first Architecture Biennale to be held in Beijing, China. June 25, 2004 Former Magistrates Court building refurbishment a winner Melbourne’s former Magistrates Court building, newly refurbished by Peter Elliott Architects as RMIT Building 20, has been awarded a prize by the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA). The building, part of the corporate headquarters of RMIT University between Russell and Latrobe Streets in Melbourne, won in the heritage architecture category at this year’s RAIA Victorian chapter annual Architecture Awards this month. June 17, 2004 RMIT Innovation and architecture expert appointed to ARC College Professor Mark Burry – the RMIT University Innovation Professor known around the world for translating architect Antoni Gaudi’s vision of the Sagrada Familia Cathedral in Barcelona into a constructed outcome – has been appointed to the Australian Research Council College of Experts. November 07, 2002 Housing the Baby Boomers The ‘Baby Boomer’ cohort is entering a period of unprecedented and extended retirement activity, and creating unique housing demands. This change will require new insights into the nature of dwelling provision and preferences for this economically powerful group. RMIT is researching this area and the project, ‘The Ageing of Aquarius: Designing new housing solutions for Australia’s Baby Boomers’ will consider alternative and innovative dwelling provision for this group. October 25, 2002 Top Architecture Award for RMIT Biosciences Building This year’s prestigious National Architecture Awards have recognised the Biosciences Building at RMIT Bundoora, awarding it the Sir Zelman Cowen Award for Public Buildings. The building is designed by John Wardle Architects and Design Inc Melbourne. John Wardle is an alumni of the RMIT Master of Architecture - Invited Program. Curator: Harriet Edquist, Professor of Architectural History June 30, 2000 RMIT Urban Spaces Project wins Victoria's top city design award RMIT University's Urban Spaces Project Stage One has won the best urban design prize at The Royal Australian Institute of Architects Victoria architecture awards. The Urban Plan was designed by Peter Elliott Architects and the City of Melbourne's city projects division. Peter Elliot is an alumni of the RMIT Master of Architecture - Invited Program. June 30, 2000 New RMIT Printing Facility wins architecture award The new RMIT Printing Facility, designed jointly by John Wardle Architects and Demaine Partnership, has won the best building prize at The Royal Australian Institute of Architects Victoria architecture awards. June 30, 2000 RMIT and Vice-Chancellor win Melbourne Lord Mayor's Prize RMIT University's Vice-Chancellor, Professor David Beanland, and the University have been awarded the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA) Victoria Lord Mayor's Prize recognising the leadership and outstanding contribution of Professor Beanland and RMIT University for the Visionary Design Strategy for the University's City Campus. It was awarded to Professor Beanland and RMIT University for: · The use of modern architecture that integrates and challenges the University's historical context; · The University's implementation of a brave business master plan that creates new open space while knitting together existing open spaces; · Extroverting of the University's previously introverted (City) Campus; · The development of a pedestrian precinct; · The inclusive nature of the project which worked with the City and other key stakeholders; · The internationalisation of RMIT University through its students. October 14, 1999 Exhibition remembers the Capitol Theatre's architects The Melbourne works of architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin are on show for the first time in Melbourne at the RMIT Gallery, 344 Swanston Street in the city. The theatre was designed in the 1920's by the Chicago architects who came to Australia after winning the Canberra competition. It was threatened with closure in the 1990's. The future of the Capitol Theatre looks brighter, following RMIT University's purchase of the theatre in May 1999. | ||||||||
