PUBLIC LECTURE: LYONS

RMIT Architecture invites you to a public lecture by LYONS – WHAT IS A PUBLIC ARCHITECTURE? AND HOW TO DESIGN IT THROUGH SPECULATION, IDEAS AND COLLABORATIONS

With a national body politic often at odds within itself, with a climate crisis upon us and with a failed referendum on the most pressing cultural question of our nationhood in very recent memory – what can architecture do amidst this societal malaise; for architecture to be an active participant in building places of hope and a more optimistic civil society, and founded on a deep respect for Country;  to not simply declare its neutrality or retreat into more conservative architectural tropes. What can a public architecture do, and look like, for our ever growing, modern democratic multicultural society, one of extraordinary diversity and ingenuity? And what are the creative means available to achieve this through collaboration and discourse? This lecture will reflect on these opportunities through the work of the architectural practice Lyons over the last decade – in the design of major, and award winning public projects, ranging from university campuses, research buildings, hospitals, community buildings, public spaces and law courts.

Lyons is one of Australia’s most well-known and awarded architecture practices. It has defined its practice as ‘idea building’, with a deep commitment to the wider public and cultural enterprise of design and city making. In 2023 the practice’s projects were awarded the Victorian Architecture Medal and the Western Australia Medal as well as a peak World Architecture Festival Award, and in 2022 were awarded the Queensland Architecture Medal. The practices work has been extensively published locally and internationally for over three decades. It has a deep connection to the RMIT University design culture, through its major project work on the city campus and ongoing design research and teaching of the next generation of this city’s creatives.
